JSON has proven to be a very easy to use, yet an immensely powerful data interchange protocol

The access and manipulation of data is core to most Web applications. JSON has proven to be a very easy to use, yet an immensely powerful data interchange protocol. However, by itself JSON is lacking a number of important capabilities, and efficient client/server data interaction must usually be customized, making development and interoperability difficult. We will look at how we can use various open specifications built on JSON to standardize and automate this interaction. Various object capabilities such as circular referencing, dates, identification, RPCs, structural definition, and prototypes are not handled with JSON, but we will see how JSPON provides identification, referencing, lazy-loading, and modification specifications to participate in persisted object graphs. We learn how to use JSON-P (and JSON with callbacks) for cross-domain transfers, and we will observe how to use JSON-RPC to do remote procedure calls and even see how these techniques can be combined for remote method calls and cross-domain persisted object graphs. We will see how we can use Persevere, a persistent object mapping framework that implements these JSON extensions, to provide orthogonal persistence capability to JavaScript. We will see visual demonstrations of JSON object graphs with the JSPON browser, and play with Jsponic, an object server that implements these standards. With these JSON extensions and tools, open communication formats can be used for robust rich serialized object interaction between clients and servers with full object graph descriptiveness. Speaker Bio: Kris Zyp is the founder of Xucia and a software developer and consultant. His main focus is in the area of JavaScript persistence, coroutines, and other language features. He has developed Persevere (a JavaScript persistent object mapping framework), Strands (JavaScript coroutine and threading support), Authenteo (an AJAX-based WCM), and JSPON (JSON extension for persistent objects) format and open source tools for accessing JSPON sources. He has participated in other open source and commercial projects as well.He is from Portland, Oregon.
