vmSight Granted U.S. Patent for Connector ID Technology

"Caller ID" Capability Enables Tracking of Users, Terminals and VMs in Virtual Desktop Systems

vmSight announced that the company was granted U.S. patent number 7,386,889 for its Connector ID technology. The patents applies to the technology vmSight uses to automatically, continuously and efficiently locate and track users, terminals and virtual machines in a virtual desktop deployment.

vmSight's patented Connector ID technology provides the same capability for computer networks that Caller ID provides for phone networks, namely identifying the person and device making a "call" to any receiver. Each user and machine on a system is assigned a static digital signature and each computer connection is stamped with those digital signatures. In this way, all machines including terminals and virtual desktops can be tracked continuously even as IP addresses change, for example in environments configured to use DHCP. In addition, all individual user activity can be tracked without the need for extra authentication or less reliable compute-intensive methods such as deep packet inspection. The operation of Connector ID happens automatically and is invisible to users in the environment.

"vmSight is the only solution that can provide a true end-to-end picture of user experience and performance across a wide set of applications in virtual desktop environments. Their patented Connector ID technology will be critical in solving virtual desktop performance management issues," stated Bernd Harzog, CEO of APM Experts.

As part of the company's Virtual Network Intelligence product suite for virtual desktop deployments, Connector ID technology allows vmSight to gather performance, reliability and compliance data for specific users, terminals and virtual desktops. The vmSight Monitoring Station, a VMware-certified virtual appliance, can monitor service levels and compliance policies in real-time, and integrates with the vmSight Center for centralized policy management and reporting.
