Netmite Corporation today announced that U.S. Patent 6,418,462, relating to the foundation of Ajax and Web 2.0 technology, will be offered at the Ocean Tomo Spring 2008 Live IP Auction on April 2nd at The Ritz-Carlton in San Francisco.
The patent, which will be offered as Lot 7, discloses methods for allowing additional tasks being performed by a client through a sideband communication channel in addition to the main communication channel between a client and server. The patent contains broad claims covering general methods for diverse industries of web, Internet services, communications, and entertainment.
Significantly, the '462 patent covers the core concept fundamental to Ajax, the Web 2.0 technology built into almost every Web browser, has been adopted by numerous popular Internet sites: extra data requested from the server may be loaded in the background, through an asynchronous data request channel, thereby ensuring that there is no interference with the display and behavior of the existing page. This technique also helps speed up computer operations by cutting down on the need to request fresh Web pages from a distant server computer.
The patented invention, initially published on the 1998 Western Multi-Conference, has stimulated a bunch of new ideas and followers in the industry. “The technology provided in this patent forms the basis of many forthcoming Internet and distributed networking methods and has the potential to impact a wide spectrum of industries and applications,” said Mr. Yongyong Xu.
“Given the widespread application of Ajax with the heightened popularity of Web 2.0, combined with the early priority date of this patent, the acquisition of this Lot presents a unique opportunity for major Internet companies, Ajax providers or developers as well as most popular Internet sites to secure their existing development efforts and provide a long-term competitive advantage in this fast-growing Ajax and Web 2.0 industry,” stated Andrew T. Ramer, President, Ocean Tomo Auctions.
