Hosted Desktops Made Simple With 'Dynamic IT for Workplaces' and VMware Virtualization

Virtualization Making Hosted Desktops Simple

With the introduction of Dynamic IT for Workplaces, Fujitsu Siemens Computers heralds a new era of computing: hosted desktops running on remote virtual machines. Leveraging VMware Virtual Desktop Solutions, Dynamic IT for Workplaces allows customers to reduce costs, and helps them to provide new services as well as increase overall service quality.

The introduction of Dynamic IT for Workplaces signals the next growth phase for virtualization technology, allowing IT operations to do more with fewer physical resources. Today, organizations find it a struggle to deploy a uniform, standard desktop-based computing environment – because end-users are running their own individual version of an operating system on their physical office desktop PC.

This means that all system installation, support, troubleshooting and upgrades can only be carried out at a micro level – machine by machine, office-by-office – costing valuable time and resources.

Companies gain a number of efficiencies by decoupling the desktop operating system from the user’s desk and integrating this into server-based virtual machines, running multiple desktops from a single server. This includes the adoption of common software standards across the workplace and the ability for any user to log-on to their own desktop from any workstation within an organization.

Dieter Herzog, Executive Vice President Infrastructure Products at Fujitsu Siemens Computers, comments: “The use of virtual machines on multi-core industry standard servers has rapidly become a standard for data centers, since it delivers efficiencies that were previously only a dream. Just as virtualization has revolutionized servers, it has the potential to deliver huge benefits for IT administrators and end-users alike by enabling hosted desktops. Administrators will enjoy the standardization and centralization while end-users will appreciate the fact that they are always using the latest desktop operating systems and applications – and of course the screaming performance.”

For end-users, a key benefit of Dynamic IT for Workplaces is 100 percent desktop application compatibility, while for many companies, the solution offers an upgrade path to Microsoft Vista – which would otherwise be a step too far for many desktop PCs in the field today.

Furthermore, the move to virtual desktops means no more lost information, since all data stored “locally” on a PC is backed up and available to the user from any logon point. Accessibility is a snip thanks to automated connection brokering. Application virtualization combined with application streaming frees IT organizations from lengthy application compatibility tests, and Operating System streaming provides efficiency in terms of storage capacity and management.

Hosted desktops also simplify the roll-out of service patches and ensure routine system backups with an added bonus being that routine maintenance can be carried out during off-peak hours.

System availability is also increased by moving user desktops away from office-based PCs on to highly-available PRIMERGY industry standard servers from Fujitsu Siemens Computers – all running in a data center or a server room – while energy consumption is reduced through the use of low-power thin clients on the desktop.

Included in the Dynamic IT for Workplaces offering is a pre-integrated end-to-end solution stack featuring third-party software that has been thoroughly evaluated by Fujitsu Siemens Computers, plus server hardware, storage systems, access devices, operating systems, middleware and applications.

Supporting enterprises in planning, implementing and managing Dynamic IT for Workplaces, Fujitsu Siemens Computers offers comprehensive end-to-end services across the entire project lifecycle, helping customers reduce project time. Risk is also reduced, since the service portfolio includes return-on-investment services such as “IT investment decision support”, designed to help customers in early project phases to already determine the financial impact of infrastructure changes such as the rollout of virtual desktops.

Fujitsu Siemens Computers is the leading European IT Infrastructure Provider with a strategic focus on next-generation Mobility and Dynamic Data Center products, services and solutions. With a platform and services portfolio of exceptional depth, our offering extends from notebooks through desktops to enterprise-class IT infrastructure solutions and services offerings.
