Virtualization: Citrix Threatens VMware

Citrix officially launched XenServer at its Summit in Florida on the day that turned into a nightmare for its rival VMware

Citrix CTO Simon Crosby told Reuters Wednesday that Citrix is doing deals with some of the world's biggest server vendors and its Xen virtualization software should be available as a pre-installed option on the boxes that account for 50% of the server market by the end of the year.

Citrix already has marketing partnerships with Dell, HP and NEC.

Citrix officially launched XenServer at its Summit in Florida on the day that turned into a nightmare for its high-flying rival VMware, the day VMware's stock dropped 34% after sales missed estimates.

Citrix then said that it exceeded its goal for recruiting XenServer resellers by 60% and signed 1,600 last year.

It also said there were 30,000 downloads of XenExpress, the free server virtualization trial package in Q4.

Meanwhile, Citrix has been showing off the XenDesktop, which is supposed to provision thousands of end points with enough memory and storage for the application being used and make thin clients viable.
