US Patent Reform Bill Moves Out of Committee

A similar version of the bill passed the Senate Judiciary Committee last week

The proposed Patent Reform Act of 2007 that critics of the US patent system put so much stock in has cleared the House Judiciary Committee and should now wend its way to the House floor for debate. Its backers are hoping for action before the August recess.

A similar version of the bill passed the Senate Judiciary Committee last week.

Among other things, the amended bill would limit patent infringement awards and forum shopping (like filing in Texas) and broaden the criteria for questioning a patent's validity.

Critics of the bill - like VCs, universities, major patent holders, the pharmaceuticals, biotechs, nanotechs and other start-ups - claim it will "significantly erode the patent protections that have driven America's innovation leadership."
