Samsung and PayPal select Nok Nok Labs to power the first FIDO Ready™ Authentication Ecosystem

Secure Consumer Payments Uniquely Enabled with Easy-to-Use Fingerprint Sensors on New Samsung Galaxy S5

PALO ALTO, Calif., April 22, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Nok Nok Labs, an innovator in modern authentication and founding member of the FIDO Alliance, today announced that Samsung and PayPal have selected the company's NNL S3 Authentication Suite to enable the new mobile payment system introduced at Mobile World Congress.   As Samsung and PayPal announced, the next Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphone will enable seamless and secure mobile payments via an integrated Fingerprint Sensor (FPS).  The S3 Suite from Nok Nok Labs allows both Samsung and PayPal to provide a simpler, more secure mobile shopping experience, leveraging the emerging FIDO standards.

The NNL Multifactor Client (MFAC) Mobile Edition (also called the "NNL FingerPrint Passport") allows the Galaxy S5 Fingerprint Sensor to connect securely to online services, and will help Samsung enable users to authenticate any FIDO Ready application with the existing security capabilities of their device. PayPal has deployed the NNL Multifactor Authentication Server (MFAS) to provide a unified and flexible authentication infrastructure that communicates securely with the NNL client on the Galaxy S5. Both Nok Nok products are FIDO Ready, meaning they have been certified by the FIDO Alliance.

"This is a tremendous opportunity to collaborate with Samsung and PayPal to help drive secure mobile payments around the globe," said Phillip Dunkelberger, President & CEO, Nok Nok Labs. "By providing the NNL FIDO Ready solution, we are bringing the vision of the FIDO Alliance on a global scale, and at the same time providing PayPal, Samsung and their customers with an easy-to-use and more secure solution."

"Combining FIDO Ready authentication with the new biometric security feature on the Galaxy S5 means users will no longer need to type passwords or login details when they shop," said Hill Ferguson, Chief Product Officer, PayPal. "Users of the Samsung Galaxy S5 can now benefit from a uniquely secure and seamless online, mobile and in-store shopping experience across the millions of merchants that accept our trusted PayPal service – this means that consumers don't need to sacrifice convenience to increase security."

The S3 Suite enables the next generation of authentication for Internet-scale applications and services, leveraging the existing security capabilities on a device, such as a built-in fingerprint sensor, camera or Trusted Platform Module (TPM), to provide user-friendly, strong authentication to any FIDO Ready application. While improving the user experience and unifying authentication silos, the S3 Suite also reduces the cost and complexity of authentication infrastructure. With a flexible and extensible architecture, the S3 Suite provides risk-appropriate authentication capabilities for a wide range of applications.

"Web services such as PayPal can now seamlessly add support for new and innovative methods of authentication, while ensuring that aged or broken authenticators can be quickly removed from circulation," said Michael Barrett, Executive Director of the FIDO Alliance. "We congratulate Nok Nok Labs on being selected by Samsung and PayPal to provide the first FIDO Ready deployment that will enable a simple, more secure mobile shopping experience."

Samsung is one of the world's most trusted handset makers, with a strong presence in more than 150 countries. PayPal enables global commerce and processes more than 9 million payments every day.

The Galaxy S5 will be available in April 2014. PayPal payments will be available from launch in 25 markets, including Australia, Brazil, Hong Kong, Russia, United Kingdom and the United States.

The consumption economy is here and so are cloud applications and solutions that offer more than subscription and flat fee models and at the same time are available on a pure consumption model, which not only reduces IT spend but also lowers infrastructure costs, and offers ease of use and availability. In their session at 15th Cloud Expo, Ermanno Bonifazi, CEO & Founder of Solgenia, and Ian Khan, Global Strategic Positioning & Brand Manager at Solgenia, discussed this shifting dynamic with an ...
Due of the rise of Hadoop, many enterprises are now deploying their first small clusters of 10 to 20 servers. At this small scale, the complexity of operating the cluster looks and feels like general data center servers. It is not until the clusters scale, as they inevitably do, when the pain caused by the exponential complexity becomes apparent. We've seen this problem occur time and time again. In his session at Big Data Expo, Greg Bruno, Vice President of Engineering and co-founder of StackI...
You use an agile process; your goal is to make your organization more agile. But what about your data infrastructure? The truth is, today's databases are anything but agile - they are effectively static repositories that are cumbersome to work with, difficult to change, and cannot keep pace with application demands. Performance suffers as a result, and it takes far longer than it should to deliver new features and capabilities needed to make your organization competitive. As your application an...
Once the decision has been made to move part or all of a workload to the cloud, a methodology for selecting that workload needs to be established. How do you move to the cloud? What does the discovery, assessment and planning look like? What workloads make sense? Which cloud model makes sense for each workload? What are the considerations for how to select the right cloud model? And how does that fit in with the overall IT transformation?

As the world moves from DevOps to NoOps, application deployment to the cloud ought to become a lot simpler. However, applications have been architected with a much tighter coupling than it needs to be which makes deployment in different environments and migration between them harder. The widespread success of cloud computing is driving the DevOps revolution in enterprise IT. Now as never before, development teams must communicate and collaborate in a dynamic, 24/7/365 environment. The web app is Agile. The REST API is Agile. The testing and planning are Agile. But alas, Data infrastructures certainly are not.
