Code42 Celebrates World Backup Day with Release of Industry Trend Report on Endpoint Backup

Code42, developer of award-winning, endpoint data protection and management solutions for consumers, businesses and the enterprise, today—on World Backup Day—released a study that reveals several important and potentially alarming trends in endpoint backup.

In a survey of 105 enterprise IT decision makers, the study found many end users store mission-critical data on endpoints—such as laptops or desktops—yet most companies do not have well-defined or closely followed policies for endpoint backup. The majority (60 percent) of respondents readily acknowledged that risk exposure and insufficient endpoint backup is a problem for their organization, with more than one in five respondents calling it a “big problem.”

“This report demonstrates why endpoint backup absolutely should be at the top of an IT department’s to-do list,” said Brian Bell, president and chief operating officer at Code42. “Endpoint devices are increasingly becoming both starting points and destinations for mission-critical data. As a result, organizations are increasingly at risk to lose sensitive data—from customer records and private personnel files to intellectual property and long-term planning documents. This easily avoidable vulnerability is no longer something that can be ignored.”

The study, executed by TechTarget, surveyed IT professionals at companies with 1,000 or more employees. It found:

  • One in five enterprise end users store mission-critical data on an endpoint device such as a desktop or laptop.
  • Only about 20 percent of those surveyed said their organization has a well-defined set of steps to help users back up data on their own.
  • Most respondents said they are less than confident that all mission-critical data stored on users’ endpoint devices is securely backed up and readily available.
  • Nearly one half of IT organizations are asked at least once per month to restore data on endpoints, and the average data restore requires approximately nine hours.
  • More than 60 percent of respondents said insufficient endpoint backup is a problem for their organization, yet only about 20 percent said they have good tools and processes in place for endpoint backup.

In the example of GoKart Labs—a digital marketing agency creating and storing volumes of data—implementing endpoint backup as part of its disaster recovery strategy paid off (watch video). “Most people think their data is secure until it’s too late,” said A.J. Meyer, co-founder of GoKart Labs. “When a broken water line flooded our offices in 2012, we were relieved to know data on our laptops and servers was secure and recoverable thanks to CrashPlan.”

Additionally in the survey, IT managers said they want an easier way to provide endpoint backup to their organizations. Nearly one half (45 percent) of survey respondents agreed with the statement, “We would make endpoint backup a bigger priority if we didn’t have to put the backup administration burden on our IT department.”

Code42 reduces the backup burden on IT by empowering employees with user-friendly endpoint backup and restore that consistently achieves the highest enterprise user adoption rates in the industry. Code42 is championing today’s World Backup Day—an occasion created to build awareness about the increasing role of data in people’s lives and the importance of regular backups—with resources for IT pros to learn best practices for data management and protection. There will be new vendors providing applications, middleware, and connected devices to support the thriving IoT ecosystem. This essentially means that electronic device manufacturers will also be in the software business. Many will be new to building embedded software or robust software. This creates an increased importance on software quality, particularly within the Industrial Internet of Things where business-critical applications are becoming dependent on products controlled by software. Qua...
As someone who has been dedicated to automation and Application Release Automation (ARA) technology for almost six years now, one of the most common questions I get asked regards Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS). Specifically, people want to know whether release automation is still needed when a PaaS is in place, and why. Isn't that what a PaaS provides? A solution to the deployment and runtime challenges of an application? Why would anyone using a PaaS then need an automation engine with workflow ...

In most cases, it is convenient to have some human interaction with a web (micro-)service, no matter how small it is. A traditional approach would be to create an HTTP interface, where user requests will be dispatched and HTML/CSS pages must be served. This approach is indeed very traditional for a web site, but not really convenient for a web service, which is not intended to be good looking, 24x7 up and running and UX-optimized. Instead, talking to a web service in a chat-bot mode would be muc...
More and more companies are looking to microservices as an architectural pattern for breaking apart applications into more manageable pieces so that agile teams can deliver new features quicker and more effectively. What this pattern has done more than anything to date is spark organizational transformations, setting the foundation for future application development. In practice, however, there are a number of considerations to make that go beyond simply “build, ship, and run,” which changes ho...

Fortunately, meaningful and tangible business cases for IoT are plentiful in a broad array of industries and vertical markets. These range from simple warranty cost reduction for capital intensive assets, to minimizing downtime for vital business tools, to creating feedback loops improving product design, to improving and enhancing enterprise customer experiences. All of these business cases, which will be briefly explored in this session, hinge on cost effectively extracting relevant data from ...
When building large, cloud-based applications that operate at a high scale, it’s important to maintain a high availability and resilience to failures. In order to do that, you must be tolerant of failures, even in light of failures in other areas of your application. “Fly two mistakes high” is an old adage in the radio control airplane hobby. It means, fly high enough so that if you make a mistake, you can continue flying with room to still make mistakes. In his session at 18th Cloud Expo, Lee...

As enterprises work to take advantage of Big Data technologies, they frequently become distracted by product-level decisions. In most new Big Data builds this approach is completely counter-productive: it presupposes tools that may not be a fit for development teams, forces IT to take on the burden of evaluating and maintaining unfamiliar technology, and represents a major up-front expense. In his session at @BigDataExpo at @ThingsExpo, Andrew Warfield, CTO and Co-Founder of Coho Data, will dis...
The Quantified Economy represents the total global addressable market (TAM) for IoT that, according to a recent IDC report, will grow to an unprecedented $1.3 trillion by 2019. With this the third wave of the Internet-global proliferation of connected devices, appliances and sensors is poised to take off in 2016. In his session at @ThingsExpo, David McLauchlan, CEO and co-founder of Buddy Platform, will discuss how the ability to access and analyze the massive volume of streaming data from mil...
WebSocket is effectively a persistent and fat pipe that is compatible with a standard web infrastructure; a "TCP for the Web." If you think of WebSocket in this light, there are other more hugely interesting applications of WebSocket than just simply sending data to a browser. In his session at 18th Cloud Expo, Frank Greco, Director of Technology for Kaazing Corporation, will compare other modern web connectivity methods such as HTTP/2, HTTP Streaming, Server-Sent Events and new W3C event APIs ...
