Mobile Commerce News Weekly – Week of November 10, 2013

The Mobile Commerce News Weekly is an online newsletter made up of the most interesting news, articles and links related to mobile commerce and marketing, mobile payments, mobile money, e-wallets, mobile banking, mobile ads and mobile security that I run across each week.  I am specifically targeting market size and market trend information.

Facebook reported sharp increases in the number of mobile users accessing the social networking site in the third quarter as well as a bump in mobile advertising revenue. However, the company's shares fell after it said it did not plan to boost the frequency of ads shown to users.  Read Original Content

According to research carried out by Adobe, UK consumers will make 20.4 percent of their online purchase this Christmas using a mobile device. Meanwhile the projected average across Europe is 12.4 percent.  Read Original Content

Flipboard, the social magazine app for iOS and Android, is extending its feelers further into mobile commerce with a new catalogs category. The update allows companies and individual users to create specialized buying guides out of items found within Flipboard and on the Web. The guides can then be deposited into custom magazines with price tags and product info alongside active links to allow purchases.  Read Original Content

Retailers are increasingly turning to mobile coupons to drive traffic in stores and online. One such company is Advance Auto Parts, which has traditionally focused its advertising dollars in print and TV. To study the effectiveness of ads online, the company recently ran a promotion simultaneously in print and online through RetailMeNot.  They found the redemption rate for the mobile ads was 30 percent, compared to less than one percent for the print ads. According to Frost and Sullivan, mobile advertising in Australia is growing at nearly 40 percent a year. The market is predicted to grow at a compound annual growth rate 39 percent from 2013 to 2018, with expenditure reaching $682 million in 2018.  By that time, 70 percent of overall mobile advertising spend will be done on tablets and 30 percent on smartphones.  Read Original Content

With 17.4 percent of web traffic coming directly from mobile this year alone, a six percent uptick since 2012, it's no wonder more and more companies are developing smart mobile advertising strategies to increase brand awareness. Moneris Solutions, a Canadian payment processor, has launched a new mobile payments service called “Payd Pro.” The new service is designed to be used alongside debit cards, allowing the financial information associated with these cards to be used by a mobile device. The mobile payments service is meant to make commerce more convenient for consumers that are constantly on the go and could be ideal for commuters that have little time to shop at physical stores.  Read Original Content

A new Parks Associates study finds over 25 percent of CE buyers in U.S. broadband households use mobile commerce apps on their smartphone to help with an in-store purchase decision, including functions such as product research, barcode scanning, and interaction with a retailer or brand app.  Read Original Content
