TraceView: Now with Free Tracing

(and more)!

We’re excited to announce three important changes to our TraceView pricing and product.

First, and most importantly, we are launching a free tier! Project includes all the data we collect on requests, hosts, service calls, JVMs and everything else, and we’re giving it away, free forever. We want you to have this, so we’ve packed everything you need into this version to help you get as much visibility into production as possible.

Second, we’re changing the name of Tracelytics to TraceView. Since Tracelytics joined AppNeta in June of last year, there has been a lot of work under the hood on both products. Stay tuned for more cross-talk between these products — we think there’s a lot unexplored territory here, and this name change is just the first step down that path.

Third, we’re also excited to change our pricing structure to a per-host model. While the first iteration of TraceView collected nothing but traces of requests, we’ve expanded since then. Today’s TraceView includes host metrics, JVM health stats, and more. Tomorrow’s will include even more information, and not all of it will be associated with a trace. Your web applications have a lot of moving parts, and we want to make sure we’re capturing all of it.

One important feature that all this relies on has actually already been out in the wild for a couple of weeks: Smart Tracing. At its core, Smart Tracing allows TraceView to dynamically adjust the amount of data it captures by using information from across your environment. It’s extremely lightweight; not only is all the calculation done on our servers, any configuration change is pushed down to your servers on an as-needed basis, without any polling necessary. This means that TraceView will collect all the information it needs in order for you to understand your webapp, at an absolute minimum of overhead. This feature is available on every plan, and if you’ve snagged an instrumentation upgrade in the last two weeks, you already have everything you need to take advantage of it.

Of course, it is 2013, and we can already hear some of you: “We’re dynamically provisioned! How does this fit with my autoscaled app?” For environments with a variable number of hosts, we’re also introducing Bursting. At our Enterprise tier, you can monitor additional hosts without having to pay for a new license every time you spin up a new machine. We’re still working out the details, but if you’re built this way, shoot us an email – we’re more than happy to share more about this feature.

For our existing customers: don’t worry, you’ve got the best of both worlds. If you want to switch to the new model we’ll help you out, and if not, your current TraceView plans are yours to keep enjoying!
