Drobo Reaches Milestone by Surpassing One Exabyte of Storage

Drobo's Customers in the SMB and Creative Professional Markets Benefit From the Company's Years of Developing Fast, Easy and Efficient Storage

SAN JOSE, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 03/13/13 -- Drobo, makers of award-winning data storage products for businesses and professionals, today announced that in aggregate, its customers have purchased and deployed more than an exabyte of storage with Drobo systems. An exabyte is 1,000 petabytes, or 1 million terabytes, or 1 billion gigabytes or the equivalent of 245 million DVDs. Since the first Drobo system was introduced in mid-2007, the company has sold approximately 250,000 systems to creative professionals, prosumers, small businesses and enterprises.

"There is a growing need for secure, flexible, on-premise storage solutions designed for small to medium-sized business environments," said Liz Conner, senior research analyst with IDC's Storage Systems and Personal Storage teams. "Solutions, like those from Drobo, whose technology has expanded to embrace SSDs and the cloud can provide a cost-effective collaboration platform for businesses to leverage and improve productivity."

Drobo was founded with the sole purpose of delivering "the best storage experience ever," with patented technology that automates complex storage functions for end-users. Drobo products immediately found acceptance within media segments and have transitioned to being highly valued solutions for small and medium businesses, as well as for departments within larger enterprises. Recently the company has extended its patented BeyondRAID™ technology to easily accommodate solid-state devices (SSD), and cloud storage integration, as evidenced by a partnership with Barracuda Network's Copy Cloud Service. For the past five years, the Drobo family has grown and now is represented by six products that offer a variety of performance and capacity options, at prices ranging from less than $600 to almost $20,000.

"This is a very exciting time for Drobo. If you consider the magnitude of an exabyte, it would look like 245 million DVDs laid end-to-end stretching 10 times from coast to coast across the United States," said Tom Buiocchi, CEO of Drobo. "We would like to thank our loyal customers and partners for their continued support in helping us to achieve this milestone."

Drobos are used in a wide range of solutions and use cases by professionals and home media enthusiasts looking to consolidate and accelerate video, photo and music files, as well as by small businesses that need an easy, affordable primary storage and backup solution to protect large amounts of data. In particular, professionals who are power users of Adobe and Apple applications, including After Effects, Aperture, Final Cut Pro, Lightroom, Photoshop and Premier Pro, find the Drobo products ideal for storing, editing and backing up files of all types. Small businesses that utilize software from VMware, Microsoft, Citrix, Amazon, Symantec, Barracuda Networks and Veeam utilize Drobo for general IT applications, virtualization, backup, replication and disaster recovery.

“Big Data analytics will shape the form of nearly every process going forward in time, from the color of the latest fashions, what the candidates say in one town versus another to the chemical composition of the latest super drug,” noted Steve Knodl, Director of Product Management at NextIO, in this exclusive Q&A with Cloud Expo Conference Chair Jeremy Geelan. “Whether these are considered “new” products,” Knodl continued, “or continuous improvement on previous processes is largely in the eyes o...
Organizations want extraordinary results from their IT units. Today's mantra is faster delivery, better quality, cheaper solutions, and safer environments. Many CIOs are implementing cloud computing enterprise architectures to address these challenges with results varying greatly. Why are some organizations seeing only limited results from cloud computing implementations while others are increasing market share, decreasing costs, generating value, and innovating faster?
The rise of cloud computing has exposed hard drive-based storage as the new data center bottleneck. Combating this, data center managers have deployed SSDs to gain the performance needed to provide real-time access to data. However, due to budget constraints, many have turned to consumer-grade SSDs without understanding that they wear out quickly when processing enterprise workloads. In this session, Esther Spanjer will discuss recent endurance advancements in SSD technology that enable usage of...
