ManageEngine Previews Cisco UCS Automated Discovery, UCS 3D View for OpManager at Cisco Live Australia

ManageEngine, the real-time IT management company, today previewed the Cisco UCS Rack Builder, a key addition to its flagship data center and network monitoring software, OpManager. The Cisco UCS Rack Builder lets users automatically discover their Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS) components; create a virtual, 3D rack of their Cisco UCS; and monitor the Cisco UCS for availability and performance by leveraging the Cisco UCS Manager XML API. A video demo of the Cisco UCS Rack Builder is available at http://ucsdemo.opmanager.com.

ManageEngine made today’s announcement at Cisco Live 2013 being held in Melbourne, Australia, March 5-8, 2013. ManageEngine will be showcasing OpManager and the Cisco UCS Rack Builder, along with rest of its IT infrastructure management solutions portfolio, in booth #54.

In a Cisco UCS environment, visualization is key to understanding IT performance, giving IT admins an at-a-glance view of their entire Cisco UCS as well as the status of the individual components. Monitoring tools, however, do not provide the visual modeling that is critical to data center optimization. Meanwhile, visual modeling tools typically provide static views that fail to provide the live, real-time status of devices. In turn, IT admins depend on spreadsheets, printed reports and data center documentation tools to know what components are present in a UCS rack and to identify available free slots.

“Visual modeling is necessary to achieve data center optimization. However, most of the DCIM solutions available today either depend on third-party tools or offer very basic visual modeling options,” said Dev Anand, director of product management at ManageEngine. “As a result, those don’t provide the status of the components or dynamically update the rack view when a component is removed or added to the rack. The Cisco UCS Rack Builder combines monitoring and visual modeling to deliver real-time status of Cisco UCS components and accurate views of Cisco UCS racks.”

Optimizing the Data Center with Visual Modeling

The Cisco UCS Rack Builder is a drag-and-drop visual modeling tool that helps data center administrators create a virtual, 3D view of their Cisco UCS racks along with the operating status of each component. Once created, the rack view is dynamically updated when components are added or removed from Cisco UCS racks to help IT administrators visualize the racks, identify free slots and optimize them accordingly.

With its Cisco UCS Rack Builder and monitoring capabilities, OpManager provides both visibility and proactive monitoring, using color codes to identify faulty components. Data center admins can drill down from the Cisco UCS rack view to the snapshot page of a faulty component to discover and troubleshoot the fault before end users are impacted.

The virtual racks created using the Cisco UCS Rack Builder can be placed on the virtual 3D data center floor available in the beta release of OpManager. In addition to Cisco UCS, racks of other vendors’ equipment can also be placed on the 3D data center floor to establish a holistic view of the data center with visibility at the data center, rack and component levels.

Availability and Pricing

The Cisco UCS Rack Builder and support for monitoring UCS components is immediately available in the beta release of OpManager. OpManager users can download the beta version via the OpManager beta program. Download OpManager at http://www.manageengine.com/network-monitoring/download.html.
