Are Multihypervisor Environments Right for Everyone?

Having multiple hypervisors is a growing trend in the virtualization world.  “One study looking at large midmarket and enterprise-sized businesses found that 65% of organizations surveyed are currently using more than one hypervisor”.  Larger corporations are using multiple hypervisors to handle the multi facets and to help cut operational cost.  Two members from the SearchServerVirtualization  Advisory Board was asked to chime in.  Maish Saidel-Keesing thought is “if you think that adding Hyper-V or OpenStack or any other hypervisor to an established environment is as easy as building a new host, then you are sadly mistaken”.   Brad Maher comment was “I think that reason large-sized companies are using multiple hypervisor is that they are being pushed to by software manufacturers”. VMware Shops Greet Virsto Arrival with Caution

Customers have mixed emotions about VMware recent purchase of the Virsto software product.   Some customer’s ask if the new storage technology is worth it.  The Virtual Machine File System (VMFS) and VMware Virtual Disk File are two layers already in existence. Why add another layer? Others feel the technology is worth it.   “If you pay $50,000 for 36TB of raw storage, you are really paying $50,000 for 12 TB of usable storage”.  Only 33% of storage is being utilized.  Read More

Red Cross and Microsoft Teams Up

Intel’s Clover Trail+
At the recent Mobile World Congress (MWC) Intel introduced Clover Trail+ a new system on a chip (SoC) for smartphones and tablets.  Clover Trail+ has a 32nm dual-core, speeds from 1.2Ghz, 1.6Ghz, and 2Ghz.  Intel’s VP Herman Eul mentioned “Microsoft should have chosen Clover Trail and put a full Windows 8 on it.  Then it would have been a fully functional tablet.”  This was in reference to Microsoft choosing an ARM chipset for its Surface RT device.  Read More
