Software Intelligence Solutions Provider V.i. Labs Doubles Revenue; Customers Achieve Significant Compliance Revenue Gains in 2012

The leading software intelligence solutions provider, V.i. Laboratories, Inc. (“V.i. Labs”), today announced record growth in 2012, furthering its leadership in helping independent software vendors (“ISVs”) identify and monetize license overuse and software piracy. V.i. Labs doubled its revenue for the third year in a row, and saw CodeArmor® Intelligence reach another major milestone by enabling customers to generate more than $200 million in new license revenue since its introduction in 2008.

“Last year could have been a challenging year with continued uncertainty around the global economy and the U.S. elections. Instead, we achieved record growth due to our ability to drive new revenue for our customers,” said Joseph Noonan, President and CEO of V.i. Labs. “Our solutions allow both large and small ISVs to gather actionable intelligence to convert license overuse and the adoption of unlicensed software into significant new revenue. As a result, our customers are seeing substantial growth in their revenue recovery efforts.”

Industry support also grew in 2012, with customers sharing the results of their CodeArmor Intelligence deployments with Amy Konary, Research Vice President, Software Licensing, Provisioning, and Delivery at IDC. The results of these interviews were included in the IDC white paper, “Information is Power: Combating Software License Misuse and Overuse with Intelligence.” One customer stated that “the CodeArmor Intelligence technology is creating a new revenue stream and enhancing the traditional leads that we have from the sales organization. We’ve recovered tens of millions of dollars by using it [CodeArmor Intelligence], and it is greatly accelerating our recovery operations.”

Earlier in 2012 Konary noted that, “there is a significant revenue opportunity associated with identifying sources of piracy and addressing them through a targeted and organized initiative. From interviewing V.i. Labs’ customers we know that the data generated by CodeArmor Intelligence can help companies add millions of dollars to their top line.”

Throughout the year V.i. Labs led a series of panel discussions on license compliance and software piracy including its fourth annual San Jose panel (featuring speakers from Adobe and PricewaterhouseCoopers), its first panel in Boston (featuring speakers from Dassault Systèmes and Sullivan & Worcester), and the second annual online panel with SIIA and FAST. V.i. Labs was also invited to participate in a License Compliance roundtable hosted by PricewaterhouseCoopers in Mountain View, CA in August.

The company also improved its V.i. Labs Data Service (VDS), an application that integrates with the CodeArmor Intelligence Dashboard to automatically identify infringing business organizations based on data collected by CodeArmor. This unique database now lists more than 39,000 organizations worldwide that are using pirated or unlicensed applications, putting them at risk of violating the Unfair Competition Act. Software vendors using VDS can work with these organizations to understand and mitigate the risks of unlicensed software use in the supply chain.

In September, V.i. Labs introduced CodeArmor Intelligence for FlexNet Licensing in response to customer demand for alternative strategies to take control of their license overuse and piracy issues without impacting their license management infrastructure, licensed customers, or product functionality and performance. Ninety percent of V.i. Labs’ ISV customers use license management to try and control the use of their applications, and CodeArmor Intelligence enhances the effectiveness of their license compliance efforts.

Data from a sample of CodeArmor Intelligence deployments in 2012 continued to prove fruitful in identifying global license compliance and software piracy trends:

  • Customers uncovered more than $4 billion in potential new software license revenue – doubling the opportunity uncovered in 2011
  • The top 20 geographies for license misuse and piracy included the United States, Korea, Germany, Russia, France, India, Spain, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, and Thailand– all regions where license revenue recovery rates are high and software vendors have been able to expand their customer base
