Riverbed Expands Its Application Delivery Controller Offering on Amazon Web Services Marketplace

Stingray Traffic Manager With Integrated Web Content Optimization and Web Application Firewall Capabilities Provides High-Performance and Reliability for Applications Hosted on Amazon Web Services

SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 11/19/12 -- Riverbed Technology (NASDAQ: RVBD), the performance company, today announced that its Stingray™ product family is available through the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Marketplace. This enhanced offering allows customers to deploy an application delivery controller (ADC) solution with Web Content Optimization (WCO) and Web Application Firewall (WAF) security capabilities. These new features are an expansion of the Stingray offering that was first launched on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) in 2009 using Amazon's DevPay model.

In addition, Riverbed® today announced that it intends to make available the Stingray Traffic Manager software with support for Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) so that enterprise customers can deploy highly available applications either within a single availability zone or spanning a hybrid environment of availability zones and third-party data centers.

Stingray Traffic Manager software is a leading application delivery controller (ADC) for applications running on Amazon Web Services, helping developers build applications that can scale to much higher transaction rates, with greater resilience and flexibility. Stingray Traffic Manager software is available through AWS Marketplace in a combination of options, including the Stingray Aptimizer's industry-leading WCO technology, and Stingray Application Firewall's application-aware web application firewall for deep application security:

  • Stingray Traffic Manager scales cloud applications by offloading SSL and connection management, enhances availability with global load balancing across availability zones, and supports DevOps initiatives with built-in TrafficScript for rapid application development;
  • Stingray Aptimizer helps developers by automating the process of content optimization and acceleration, reducing the need to hand-tune every web page;
  • Stingray Application Firewall provides an additional layer of Layer 7 protection to help protect against external threats such as SQL injection, cross-site scripting and other external threats.

"By running the Riverbed ADC solution in Amazon's cloud environment, we have experienced instant performance improvements, resulting in faster performing web applications. The intelligent web traffic management software routes requests to different pools and the back-up and restore features give us the confidence that we can deal with any eventuality," said Simon McLean, Managing Director of Click Travel, an online business travel provider.

Large-scale applications require a high-performance, scalable solution for SSL and compression, global load balancing, automatic WCO, and in-depth protection against external threats. Stingray Traffic Manager is designed to address these requirements by integrating seamlessly with applications deployed on AWS to provide load balancing, user experience optimization, application scalability, and fine-grained application control. Providing advanced traffic management features that are not available with traditional load balancers, Stingray becomes a key component of an organization's application infrastructure. Pricing is flexible, giving more deployment options for capacity reservation and cost models, including Amazon reserved instances and spot pricing.

"The newest generation of online applications for retail, gaming, and digital media need the ability to scale up rapidly to meet customer demand and be able to roll out new features on a daily or weekly basis," said Apurva Davé, vice president of products and marketing, Stingray business unit at Riverbed. "Maintaining this level of sustained service enhancement means that developers need to maximize productivity and accelerate release cycles. Stingray software unleashes application performance in the Amazon Cloud and allows developers to focus on building new features and services."

The Stingray Traffic Manager software with support for Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) is expected to be generally available in Q4 2012.

There is no doubt that Big Data is here and getting bigger every day. Building a Big Data infrastructure today is no easy task. There are an enormous number of choices for database engines and technologies. To make things even more challenging, requirements are getting more sophisticated, and the standard paradigm of supporting historical analytics queries is often just one facet of what is needed. As Big Data growth continues, organizations are demanding real-time access to data, allowing immed...
SYS-CON Events announced today that the "First Containers & Microservices Conference" will take place June 9-11, 2015, at the Javits Center in New York City. The “Second Containers & Microservices Conference” will take place November 3-5, 2015, at Santa Clara Convention Center, Santa Clara, CA. Containers and microservices have become topics of intense interest throughout the cloud developer and enterprise IT communities.
There is no question that the cloud is where businesses want to host data. Until recently hypervisor virtualization was the most widely used method in cloud computing. Recently virtual containers have been gaining in popularity, and for good reason. In the debate between virtual machines and containers, the latter have been seen as the new kid on the block – and like other emerging technology have had some initial shortcomings. However, the container space has evolved drastically since coming on...
With worldwide spending on cloud services and infrastructure growing by 23% in 2015 to $118B, it is clear that cloud services are here to stay. Yet, the rate of cloud adoption varies by companies and markets around the world. With thousands of outages and hijacks across the Internet every day, one reason for hesitation is the faith in quality Internet performance. In his session at 16th Cloud Expo, Michael Kane, Senior Manager at Dyn, will explore how Internet performance affects your end-user...

Data-intensive companies that strive to gain insights from data using Big Data analytics tools can gain tremendous competitive advantage by deploying data-centric storage. Organizations generate large volumes of data, the vast majority of which is unstructured. As the volume and velocity of this unstructured data increases, the costs, risks and usability challenges associated with managing the unstructured data (regardless of file type, size or device) increases simultaneously, including end-to-...

Even though it’s now Microservices Journal, long-time fans of SOA World Magazine can take comfort in the fact that the URL – soa.sys-con.com – remains unchanged. And that’s no mistake, as microservices are really nothing more than a new and improved take on the Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) best practices we struggled to hammer out over the last decade. Skeptics, however, might say that this change is nothing more than an exercise in buzzword-hopping. SOA is passé, and now that people are ...
The Domain Name Service (DNS) is one of the most important components in networking infrastructure, enabling users and services to access applications by translating URLs (names) into IP addresses (numbers). Because every icon and URL and all embedded content on a website requires a DNS lookup loading complex sites necessitates hundreds of DNS queries. In addition, as more internet-enabled ‘Things' get connected, people will rely on DNS to name and find their fridges, toasters and toilets. Acco...
Gartner predicts that the bulk of new IT spending by 2016 will be for cloud platforms and applications and that nearly half of large enterprises will have cloud deployments by the end of 2017. The benefits of the cloud may be clear for applications that can tolerate brief periods of downtime, but for critical applications like SQL Server, Oracle and SAP, companies need a strategy for HA and DR protection. While traditional SAN-based clusters are not possible in these environments, SANless cluste...
You often hear the two titles of "DevOps" and "Immutable Infrastructure" used independently. In his session at DevOps Summit, John Willis, Technical Evangelist for Docker, will cover the union between the two topics and why this is important. He will cover an overview of Immutable Infrastructure then show how an Immutable Continuous Delivery pipeline can be applied as a best practice for "DevOps." He will end the session with some interesting case study examples.
