Clustrix and Blue Box Announce Partnership With First-Ever Benchmark Highlighting Ruby on Rails Scalability on MySQL and MySQL-Compatible Databases

Results Shatter Ruby on Rails Perceived Scalability Limitations on MySQL; Blue Box Launches Scalable Ruby on Rails Service Powered by Clustrix

SAN FRANCISCO, CA and NEW YORK, NY -- (Marketwire) -- 10/02/12 -- Clustrix, the scale out database for Big Data applications, and Blue Box, the leading provider of hosting services for Ruby on Rails applications, today announced a strategic partnership at Percona Live in New York. In conjunction, Clustrix and Blue Box also made public today the results of the first-ever comprehensive benchmark of Ruby on Rails implementations on MySQL and MySQL-compatible databases. The exciting benchmark results were delivered by Clustrix software development and test engineers Clayton Cole and Neil Harkins during their keynote presentation at Percona Live, http://bit.ly/Srdeyh

"This industry first benchmark demonstrates to developers that they can scale Rails 10X the expected limitations without pain using the scale-out database from Clustrix," said Robin Purohit, CEO, Clustrix. "We are excited to partner with Blue Box to make it easy for Ruby on Rails developers to design or migrate their applications onto our Database-as-a-Service."

Added Jesse Proudman, Blue Box CEO, "Not only were we able to achieve performance and scalability that is off the charts for the Ruby on Rails market, but this benchmark demonstrates that Rails is ideal for building the next generation of Web and mobile applications. And with Clustrix under the hood as our scale-out database, our customers have no worries about scale, performance and availability."

About the Ruby on Rails Benchmark
Tacit Knowledge, a software engineering firm, along with Clustrix, designed and coded the benchmark's application, which simulated an auction website with social media components. They implemented the schema within the Rails framework, then crafted 13 scenarios to demonstrate user interactions that would cause database operations -- from simple INSERTs to multiple UPDATEs inside a transaction and JOINs.

Blue Box hosted the testing environment and supplied the MySQL server and client servers for the benchmark, and Percona, the largest independent MySQL support and consulting company, validated the MySQL server configuration used in the benchmark.

The initial data set size was 475 GB, to emulate a real-world production environment and to ensure the data set significantly exceeded total memory sizes. The benchmark used a mix of the different workload scenarios in a ratio of 52% reads to 48% writes, run at random with an equal probability of executing each scenario. Numbers of concurrent users (threads) were ramped up from one to well past 10,000.

Benchmark test results were captured in terms of Transactions Per Second (TPS) and in average scenario execution time (in whole seconds) for each of the three database setups observed (MySQL, three-node Clustrix, and six-node Clustrix). The application and test configuration parameters were unchanged from the MySQL setup to Clustrix's MySQL drop-in replacement database.

At 1,024 concurrent users -- around the point where an application or website is gaining popularity -- the Rails application powered by a three-node Clustrix cluster executed 8X the observed TPS of standard MySQL, while the six-node cluster executed 15X MySQL's observed TPS. (Actual TPS: 3,500 for MySQL, 29,000 for three-node cluster and 53,000 for a six-node cluster.) In addition, at 1,024 concurrent users, transaction response times were 25X faster on the Clustrix configuration, averaging around 100 milliseconds compared to ~2.5 seconds on the MySQL setup.

CloudEXPO Stories
DevOpsSUMMIT at CloudEXPO, to be held June 25-26, 2019 at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA – announces that its Call for Papers is open. Born out of proven success in agile development, cloud computing, and process automation, DevOps is a macro trend you cannot afford to miss. From showcase success stories from early adopters and web-scale businesses, DevOps is expanding to organizations of all sizes, including the world's largest enterprises – and delivering real results. Among the proven benefits, DevOps is correlated with 20% faster time-to-market, 22% improvement in quality, and 18% reduction in dev and ops costs, according to research firm Vanson-Bourne. It is changing the way IT works, how businesses interact with customers, and how organizations are buying, building, and delivering software.
Nicolas Fierro is CEO of MIMIR Blockchain Solutions. He is a programmer, technologist, and operations dev who has worked with Ethereum and blockchain since 2014. His knowledge in blockchain dates to when he performed dev ops services to the Ethereum Foundation as one the privileged few developers to work with the original core team in Switzerland.
It cannot be overseen or regulated by any one administrator, like a government or bank. Currently, there is no government regulation on them which also means there is no government safeguards over them. Although many are looking at Bitcoin to put money into, it would be wise to proceed with caution. Regular central banks are watching it and deciding whether or not to make them illegal (Criminalize them) and therefore make them worthless and eliminate them as competition. ICOs (Initial Coin Offerings) are something most have no idea as to what it means and how you utilize it. Where is the "Stamp of Approval" or "Stamp of Legitimacy" on some of these Bitcoin websites (how do you know you are not dealing with a scammer?)
Business professionals no longer wonder if they'll migrate to the cloud; it's now a matter of when. The cloud environment has proved to be a major force in transitioning to an agile business model that enables quick decisions and fast implementation that solidify customer relationships. And when the cloud is combined with the power of cognitive computing, it drives innovation and transformation that achieves astounding competitive advantage.
