"Our hearts go out to the victims of this disaster, tens of thousands of whom now find themselves without basic necessities in the ability to connect with the outside world," said Jonathan Schwartz, president and COO of Sun as Sun and Sun Foundation, of which Schwart is also president, yesterday announced that they are dispatching company volunteers to Red Cross donation sites and communications equipment to the disaster zone to help provide support to Hurricane Katrina victims.
"We are sending numerous volunteer technicians armed with internet infrastructure to the Cajun Dome in Lafayette, Louisiana, to construct Internet access points so those affected may access email, search for missing loved ones and connect with friends and relatives desperately awaiting news," Schwartz continued.
Sun technicians are currently putting infrastructure in place to expand connectivity for evacuees in the areas impacted and assist impacted companies with business continuance efforts. Sun is also working closely with relief partners Red Cross and Aidmatrix on a virtual on-line drive to get needed resources to the impacted regions as quickly as possible.
"In addition to providing equipment and technical assistance, Sun's more than 39,000 employees are making personal donations to the Sun Foundation's matching gifts program," added Schwartz. "The program raised $1.2 million for Tsunami relief earlier this year and we hope to meet or exceed that in response to Katrina."
"Sun is in the business of sharing and our 'Share the Opportunity' initiative delivers technical resources to those in need around the world. It's now time for us and all companies in a position to help to look closer to home and share resources and expertise in any way that can help."
Additionally, Sun is committed to helping Sun, StorageTek, and SeeBeyond customers with their disaster recovery efforts. Sun has set up a disaster relief team to handle the service requests that have resulted from the impact of Hurricane Katrina. To access this team of Sun specialists, customers can email the constantly monitored address: Sun-Support-for-Hurricane-Katrina@sun.com or call 800-USA-4SUN (800-872-4786).
