AJAX, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 07/02/09 -- Volkswagen Canada announced that it once again increased vehicle sales and market share as the Canadian passenger vehicle market declined 13.2% in the month of June. With its third best sales month ever since Volkswagen's introduction to Canada in 1952, and its highest monthly sales in nine years, the company sold 4,513 new vehicles and posted a 15.8% increase in sales. As a result, Volkswagen raised its market share of the total Canadian industry to 3.3% for the month compared to 2.4% in June 2008. The Volkswagen brand took 4.9% of the Canadian passenger car market during the month, an increase of 11 points versus the previous year, as well as grew its SUV and minivan sales by 210.1% in June versus the same time period in 2008.
Leading the increase in passenger car sales is the increasing consumer acceptance of Volkswagen's TDI Clean Diesel technology propelling an increase in new Jetta sales by 144.1% during June. TDI Clean Diesel sales comprised almost a quarter of Volkswagen vehicle sales for the month. Further acceptance of Volkswagen's BlueMotionTechnologies also helped Touareg sales increase by 33.3% with the availability of the 3.0 litre V6 TDI Clean Diesel engine in this SUV model. Entries into new product segments by Volkswagen with the "GTI of Small SUVs", the Tiguan, and its affordable 7-passenger minivan, the Routan, led to the best ever sales months for both models.
In the first half of this year, Volkswagen has already delivered 18,988 new vehicles in Canada, and raised its share of the total vehicle market to 2.6% year-to-date.
Volkswagen sales by model line for the month of June 2009 and full-year 2009 were:
