Sun Microsystems Leads International Consortium and Wins Grant for R & D Project

Sun Microsystems has announced it will strive to solve accessibility challenges for all devices from cell phones to desktops and Web applications by leading a consortium of over 20 other companies and organizations. The consortium will help define new approaches and solutions for building accessibility support into future information and communication technologies. Funded by a grant awarded by the European Commission, the AEGIS Project is based on the Sun-led proposal and technical architecture. Actuate Announces Final Results of Tender Offer

Actuate Corporation has announced the final results of its modified Dutch auction tender offer for up to $60 million of its common stock, which expired at 12:00 midnight, New York City time, on Thursday, December 18th. Based on a final count by the depositary for the tender offer, a total of approximately 20.7 million shares of common stock (including shares tendered by notice of guaranteed delivery) were properly tendered and not withdrawn at prices within the stated range for the tender offer of $3.00 to $3.50 per share. The Company has accepted for purchase and will promptly pay $3.50 per share for 17,142,857 of these shares at a total cost of $59,999,999.50. This represents a proration rate of approximately 83.0%.

Aptana has announced the 1.0 release of Aptana Jaxer and the introduction of Jaxer Pro, both “AJAX servers” that let developers create entire web applications using the ubiquitous set of languages common to web browsers: JavaScript, DOM, CSS, and HTML. To achieve this, Jaxer embeds the open source Mozilla Firefox browser engine within a server so that developers can have the same execution environment on the application server as they have in the web browser – a simplification of web technologies that reduces complexity in the development and management of web applications. ILOG has announced that it has been designated by International Data Corporation as the Business Rule Management Systems market leader in the October 2008 report “Worldwide Business Rules Management Systems 2008 – 2012 Forecast and 2007 Vendor Shares”. ILOG is the sole vendor residing in the “star” status quadrant which identifies vendors with both high market share and high growth. IDC’s study found that the worldwide BRMS market enjoyed healthy growth with revenues increasing 11.4 percent from 2006 to 2007 for an industry-wide total of $260.8 million in annual license and maintenance revenue.

AJAXWorld delegates today saw a no-slides, code-only presentation that started with a blank directory and built a data-driven, AJAX enabled, ASP.NET web application from scratch that implemented common AJAX patterns with the rich set of AJAX Control Toolkit, accessed data with LINQ, and implemented standards-based styling and layout using CSS and clean HTML. Brad also presented the new features of ASP.NET 3.5 and Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 and how they integrated together to provide the world's most productive web development experience. This session used the 100% free .NET Framework and Visual Studio tools, and the resulting application worked with all browsers, Safari, Firefox and, of course, IE.
