Struts Portlets with AJAX in Action

The Struts Framework from Apache is a very popular, robust Web application framework. Many corporate companies have deployed tons of Web applications using Struts. And they hit the ground with abundant technical resources. They can develop newer applications quickly. Portal implementations offer a new challenge by introducing new frameworks and APIs. To leverage existing assets and skills, WebSphere Portal supports the Struts Portlet Framework so Struts Web applications can be easily migrated to a portal.  AJAX, or Asynchronous JavaScript and XML, is a new happening technology to make Web applications function like client/server applications. I mean Web pages triggering requests based on events (asynchronously) that refresh only specific parts of a page as opposed to refreshing the whole page. The Struts Framework There's tons of information on Struts, AJAX, and the S... (more)

How AJAX Can Bring Cross-Platform Rich User Interfaces to Web Applications

"Though it's been around for a while, AJAX (Asynchronous Javascript + XML) is now a hot topic in the application developer community because it brings cross-platform rich user interfaces to web applications without having to use products like Microsoft .NET or Macromedia," said Steve Benfield, VP of strategy & technology evangelism at ClearNova, Inc., as it was announced that executives from ClearNova will be championing AJAX  in their session at the South Florida Java User's Group in the Miami area on August 17. The discussion will be led by Benfield - pictured here talking to SYS-CON.TV about AJAX earlier this month. "We plan to explain what all the fuss is about, dispel some myths and advise how best to take advantage of the trend," Benfield said.  The discussion is titled "Using AJAX to Build Rich Internet Applications," and will take place Wednesday, August 17 fr... What Are the Pitfalls to Implementing an AJAX Framework?

"Though it's been around for a while, AJAX is now a hot topic in the application developer community because it brings cross-platform rich user interfaces to web applications without having to use products like Microsoft .NET or Macromedia," said Steve Benfield (pictured) as he announced that his September 27 session at the Austin Java User's Group will be called "Injecting Life into Boring Web Applications with AJAX." Benfield plans, he says, to explain what all the AJAX fuss is about, dispel some myths and advise how best to take advantage of the trend. Benfield, who is VP of strategy at ClearNova - based in Alpharetta, part of Georgia's growing technology corridor - championed AJAX (Asynchronous Javascript + XML) and took a Q&A with participants at his recent live SYS-CON.TV webinar on "AJAX and Rich Internet Applications," the archive version of which can be vie... AJAX and the Maturation of Web Development

I have always imagined the information space as something to which everyone has immediate and intuitive access, and not just to browse but to create." (Weaving the World Wide Web by Tim Berners-Lee) From the beginning, the World Wide Web that Tim Berners-Lee imagined was a place where the architecture of participation ruled. Berners-Lee's first application for accessing the information Web was both a browser and an editor, and throughout the early 1990s he worked diligently to encourage Web browser development groups to develop editors and servers as well as browsers. As early as the spring of 1992, the challenge was clear: "Although browsers were starting to spread, no one working on them tried to include writing and editing functions....As soon as developers got their client working as a browser and released it to the world, very few bothered to continue to deve... Design Playing Out in Your Product

AJAX, new application frameworks and more iterative development processes mean that many developers find themselves working more closely with designers or even being charged with design themselves. In this session, we will start with a broader definition of design and discuss its importance. Using a framework to structure the conversation, we will survey the various aspects of design and how they play out, for better or worse, in your product. Topics covered in this session will include visual design, interaction design, information architecture and user research. We will also specifically address design issues that AJAX and RIAs introduce and how to address them. Whether you need to work with a designer or do the work yourself, you will leave this session with resources, ideas, and examples you can apply immediately. David Verba is director of technology for Adapti... (more)

Rich Internet Application Technology Comparison: AJAX, Flash, Silverlight

Today, RIA technology is widely used, also referred to as Rich Internet Clients (RICs). RICs provide the usability, responsiveness, and reuse of client/server applications with the deployment, manageability, and availability of a traditional Web application. Many websites are using DHTML and AJAX technology in HTML pages. Another very popular technology is Flash. How about Silverlight, though? The developers behind Dot Net Outsource, the leading Chinese provider of global outsourcing services, specialize in in both "Web-based" and Client-Server technologies on the Microsoft .NET platform. Here they look at Silverlight and compare it, for their particular needs, with DHTML/AJAX and Flash. RIAs offer the flexibility and ease of use of an intelligent desktop application, and add the broad reach of traditional web applications with an entirely new kind of web experience... (more)

While the focus and objectives of IoT initiatives are many and diverse, they all share a few common attributes, and one of those is the network. Commonly, that network includes the Internet, over which there isn't any real control for performance and availability. Or is there? The current state of the art for Big Data analytics, as applied to network telemetry, offers new opportunities for improving and assuring operational integrity. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Jim Frey, Vice President of Strategic Alliances at Kentik, discussed tactics and tools to bridge the gap between IoT project teams and the network planning and operations functions that play a significant role in project success.
